Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s scheduled visit to Darjeeling was disrupted on Tuesday due to adverse weather conditions, forcing a last-minute shift to a virtual address. His helicopter was unable to land in the hill town because of heavy fog and unstable atmospheric conditions, prompting authorities to prioritise safety and cancel the landing.
Instead of calling off the rally, Shah addressed the gathering virtually from Malda, ensuring that the event continued as planned. His speech was broadcast on large screens at the rally venue in Darjeeling, allowing supporters to follow his address despite his physical absence. The move helped maintain the campaign momentum in the region.
According to officials, the decision to prevent the helicopter landing was taken after assessing the risk posed by poor visibility and unpredictable weather in the hills. Authorities emphasised that such precautions are necessary, as even minor miscalculations in such conditions could pose serious safety threats.
During his virtual address, Shah spoke on key political issues, including development, governance, and the upcoming elections. He urged voters to support change and highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the central government, while also criticising the current state administration.
While some supporters expressed disappointment over not seeing him in person, the rally continued with enthusiasm. Many viewed the use of digital technology as an effective alternative, ensuring that the campaign message reached the audience despite weather-related disruptions.
